General (Retired) Tom Middendorp was The Netherlands Chief of Defense for five and a half years and spent 38 years serving his country. He commanded soldiers on all levels and was deployed to Afghanistan several times; in 2006/2007 as the Deputy NATO Senior Civil Representative, and in 2009 as the commander of a multinational taskforce in Uruzgan Province.

End 2009 he became the Director of Operations where he planned, prepared and coordinated Dutch units in more than 20 mission area’s. 
As the Chief of Defense (2012 – 2017) he led the Defence organisation through an intense period of transition and international cooperation. 
Overall, he has extensive operational and strategic experience of building unity of effort with different nations, governmental- and non-governmental organisations, international institutions, and civil stakeholders in order to deal with a wide range of security risks. 

After retiring in October 2017, he joined the Hague Center for Strategic Studies and the Clingendael Research Institute as a Senior Visiting Fellow. He also became the first Chairman of the International Military Council on Climate and Security and is the Netherlands’ Special Envoy on European Defence Cooperation.
