Statement of the NATO PA President on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Outbreak

19 March 2020

Brussels, 19 March 2020 - The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Mr Attila Mesterhazy (Hungary), issued the following statement:

“The world is currently gripped by an unprecedented health crisis. The coronavirus knows no borders. It has challenged our way of life by forcing many governments around the world to put in place measures to restrict the free movement of people. It has also brought large parts of our economies to a halt.

In these difficult times, my thoughts are first and foremost with the relatives of all those who have lost their lives to the virus and with the many more who are hospital-bound and fighting off the infection. I would also like to pay tribute to the medical personnel in all our countries whose courage and dedication are truly admirable.

The key to overcoming this crisis lies in each and every one of us acting responsibly and caring for the others as well as for themselves.

Through solidarity and unity of purpose we will stand strong together and defeat this invisible enemy.
It is my sincere hope that we will learn from this global crisis – and we must. Let it be a rallying cry for more solidarity, unity, and cooperation within the Alliance and across the whole world.”
