NATO PA President Rasa Jukneviciene underlines crucial transatlantic bond in visit to Washington DC

Washington DC, 14 November 2018 - In a visit to the United States, NATO PA President Rasa Jukneviciene met members of Congress and officials from the Departments of State and Defense to discuss key Alliance priorities immediately before the Assembly’s 64th Annual Session in Halifax, Canada.
President Jukneviciene wished to stress the Assembly’s role in maintaining strong transatlantic solidarity at the legislative level and also to share her perspectives on the challenges facing the Alliance, particularly through Russian efforts to destabilize its neighbours and undermine international laws and norms.

She therefore shared her observations from her recent visits - which included Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova – and emphasized the key importance of Alliance actions to enhance defence and deterrence since Russia’s occupation of Crimea and its aggressive actions in Eastern Ukraine.

Meeting with members of the United States Congressional Delegation led by Congressman Mike Turner (R – Ohio), President Jukneviciene underlined the Assembly’s support for NATO’s Defence Investment Pledge and for a stronger overall European contribution to Alliance capabilities.  She also thanked the delegation for their support for the Enhanced Forward Presence in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and for the Tailored Forward Presence in the Black Sea.
