Brussels/Rome, 14 April 2018 - Chemical weapons are abhorrent, and their use is illegal, inhumane, and immoral. The Syrian regime, however, has repeatedly used chemical weapons against its own citizens, causing international outrage and revulsion, although – remarkably and tragically – this reaction has not been universal.
The actions by the United States, France and the United Kingdom are intended to reduce Syria’s capacity to use these weapons, and to deter their further use by the Syrian or any other regime.
These actions should be supported by all 192 nations which have signed the Chemical Weapons Conventions and who are committed to ridding the world of these appalling weapons.
I hope that the entire international community will now redouble its efforts to find a diplomatic and political solution to ending the conflict in Syria, and for reducing and resolving international tension throughout the region.
