Brussels, 7 April 2017 - “The action by the United States against the Shyrat Airfield was a response to the appalling use of chemical agents by the Syrian regime”, said NATO Parliamentary Assembly President, Paolo Alli.
“The use of chemical weapons is an affront to civilized societies, a transgression of international laws and norms, and an act without morality or humanity. The United Nations is deadlocked by disagreements about how to address the conflict and has therefore been unable to prevent untold casualties and a massive flow of refugees.
“Those responsible will ultimately be called to account, but in the meantime every effort must be made to prevent and deter the use of chemical weapons which are, as NATO’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg has stated, a threat to international peace and security. The United States’ action must be seen in that context and I fervently hope that it will give a new impetus to the struggle to resolve the conflict in Syria.”
“It is more important than ever for the international community to find a way to overcome the impasse at the United Nations and bring an end to the suffering of the Syrian people”.
