Born on 5 May 1958 in Welver-Meyerich; married, two children.
Attended the Protestant elementary school in Welver; obtained Abitur (higher-education entrance qualification) at Archigymnasium, an academic secondary school in Soest; studied in Münster to become a teacher.
Joined the SPD in 1976, since which time he has been permanently active as a voluntary local politician in Welver, Münster, Soest, Bad Sassendorf and the Ruhr district; full-time head of the SPD in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Unna, Hamm and of Ruhr SPD from 1986 to 2012.
He was a managing director of a real estate company in Dortmund from 2002 to 2008.
Mr Hellmich has been a Member of the German Bundestag since June 2012. In the Bundestag, he has been a member of the Defence Committee and substitute member of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and the Committee on Health in the 17th electoral term. Since May 2015, he has been the Chairman of the Defence Committee.
A member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since 2014, Mr Hellmich has been elected Treasurer of the NATO PA at the Annual Session in London in 2019. His mandate will run from 1st April 2020 to 31 March 2022.From 2015 to 2018, Mr Hellmich also served as Special Rapporteur of the Defence and Security Committee of the NATO PA.
